Abstract:
While the definition of hope has received much attention, the definition of optimism has remained largely neglected. I here distinguish, characterize and relate three varieties of optimism: factual optimism, which corresponds to having good expectations; focal optimism , which corresponds to seeing the glass half full; and axiological optimism, which corresponds to the idea that good is stronger than bad.
