Dear all,

Abstract:
I assume that when one has conscious experiences one can often be aware not only of these experiences but of oneself as a subject, i.e., as having these experiences. It has been suggested that this self-experience can provide the basis for substantial knowledge of one’s nature and of what it is to be a subject of experiences (see, e.g., Galen Strawson Selves; Martine Nida-Rümelin ‘Self-Awareness’; Philip Goff Consciousness and Fundamental Reality). I shall argue that there are important limits to what one can learn in this way, either about what it is to be a subject or about the nature of subjects more generally.
